Tree Care
Choose a low lying, sunny area. American Black Walnut Trees like a lot of moisture with sunlight.
Dig and plant in a hole that is 2” wider than the diameter of the container it is shipped in. Make hole 18” deep. Fill with nutrient enriched soil and make sure the tree is straight.
Cage tree with chicken wire with “Tube Style” barrier with clearance of 2’-0” wide x 3’-0” long with tree in the center. Don’t worry about branches touching cage.
Cover the top of the cage with more wire mesh to keep pests such as squirrels from climbing down and destroying the young sapling.
Prune the branches so tree is one “stick” piece as it grows in order to maintain a straight trunk. Once the tree reach a height where you cannot reach the branches, it will be strong enough to grow straight on its own.
